An Australian Journalist once asked a youth player at Sporting Club of Portugal Academy about his experience while at the Academy. When asked what the pressure to win was like, the youth player responded that the emphasis was not on winning, as much as it was on playing well. He stated the usual first question asked by Staff at Sporting was “How did YOU play today?” followed by “How did the TEAM play today?” and only after that on occasion the score was asked.

Paul Van Veen a highly respected Dutch Trainer was asked the following question…

What is a typical Dutch Youth Coach like?

PVV: “A good Dutch Coach teaches the players how they can play soccer autonomously. We consider it important that players take the initiative for themselves during the match. A good youth coach also asks questions instead of just giving orders. The players must find their own solutions during matches. In other cultures players often look to the coach when they can’t find solutions. We don’t want that, coaches can help but players must be able to find solutions themselves.”
